Allspice Berries, Jamaican

Ingredients: allspice berries (Jamaica)

Allspice is a warm aromatic spice, made from the dried berries of the Pimenta dioica tree. It is said to taste like a combination of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and is commonly found in recipes for apple pie, jerk chicken, and Swedish meatballs.

For best results, toast whole allspice berries in a dry pan to bring out the flavor from the volatile oils. You can grind the berries before using for a stronger flavor then pre-ground allspice, or use them whole in mulled wine, apple cider, or your next pickle brine.

Five whole allspice berries equal approximately one tsp. of ground allspice.
