Taking its name from the Greek word basileus, which means "king", basil has been considered king of the herbs for over five thousand years and is used in cuisines throughout the world.

Sweet, yet savory, with pepper and minty tones, dried basil is a perfect addition to tomato based sauces like marinara and pizza sauce. Basil pairs well with oregano, mint, parsley, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, cilantro, and garlic.

It can often be found on mozzarella cheese, olives, pasta, peas, pizza, potatoes, rice, white beans, and zucchini.

Substitute 1 tsp. dried basil for any recipe calling for 1 tbsp. fresh basil.
